BJP conjured "Jinnah," and in its addresses called "Surgical strike on Hyderabad" and bigwigs like party chief JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and numerous Union Ministers were deployed. It has been hard to accept that this is only a common political race being battled in Hyderabad. The question is why the BJP has raised the stakes to this level in a civic election like the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)?
What’s unique is that Hyderabad has an opposite pole to Hindutva - Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). A long way from being a BJP B-group, AIMIM is profoundly called-out by Hindutva associations, and this is apparent in the language utilized by BJP members against Owaisi during the campaign.
BJP's young 'Rabble-rouser' Tejashwi Surya said at a public gathering in Hyderabad, "One decision in favour of Owaisi is one decision in favour of Mohammad Ali Jinnah." He also went on to connect AIMIM to Osama Bin Laden.
"It is because people vote for Owaisi in Hyderabad that he can contest Bihar elections. It is important to defeat him here", said BJP MP Tejashwi Surya. This control is believed to have been split with Hyderabad's separation in 1956 and had been so for a while. In any case, this changed with the restoration of AIMIM in the last part of the 1970s and held a tight grasp on Old City political issues for the past forty years.
The BJP is aware that the TRS cannot be ousted except if an ideological fight is pursued against it, doubting the general concept of Telangana that it represents. Hindutva sees Telangana as the consequence of Hindus' protection from a Muslim ruler - the Nizam and the need to resuscitate the "glory" of the "pre-Muslim" period. TRS sees Telangana's set of experiences not in Hindu versus Muslim terms, yet as Kakatiya, Qutbshahi, and Asaf Jahi rule.
The AIMIM's vision is connected to that of the TRS however with a solid push on securing the interests of Muslims. Leading up to the polls, BJP has blamed TRS for being an intermediary of AIMIM, marking it as "Pro-Muslim" and "anti-Hindu". The goal is to win over the TRS' Telugu speaking Hindu votes while limiting the Old City contests to a straight fight with AIMIM.
Other than the representative significance of Hyderabad examined over, the GHMC is basic to catch power in Telangana. The GHMC includes 24 Assembly constituencies, about one-fifth of the total number of constituencies in Telangana. The limits of the GHMC are spread across four Lok Sabha seats: Seven Assembly segments each from the Hyderabad and Secunderabad Lok Sabha seats, five portions from Malkajgiri, three from Chevella, and one from Medak.
BJP has generally had a strong foot hold in the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency, having won it five times over the most recent thirty years. In any case, it had been truly subject to its past partner Telugu Desam Party in different seats. The decrease of the TDP and Congress in the GHMC region has opened space for the BJP.
Somewhat, the TRS is to be faulted for this too. Other than KCR's popularity, the TRS has likewise kept up its capacity by destroying the Opposition. The TRS has gained from mass defections from the Congress. Congress had won 19 seats in the 2018 Assembly surveys, presently just 6 MLAs remain. However, in this electoral race, there has been radio silence from Congress’s end. Some like A Revanth Reddy and Uttam Kumar Reddy were chosen for Parliament, yet most others surrendered to TRS. The Opposition has been rendered so irrelevant that even the Opposition leader in the Telangana Assembly is Akbaruddin Owaisi from TRS's informal ally AIMIM. It is costing KCR dearly for not taking on BJP at the Centre. The party has helped BJP pass a few key litigations, by casting a ballot or abstaining. It might have been a mistake for KCR to expect that this lack of bias on public issues may protect him from BJP's development. Plainly, that did not happen. What’s more, presently BJP has shown up at his doorstep. The party won four seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha decisions, including the seat held by KCR's daughter Kavitha, and now it compromises TRS's hold over GHMC. The BJP's ascent is apparent in its triumph in the ongoing by-survey in Dubbak, where it was non-existent until a couple of years back.
The BJP would bash-on relentlessly in its goal to extend; even it implies communalizing a municipal election campaign or sending its highest chiefs in a local fight. The inquiry is whether TRS changes its methodology and turns out to be more aggressive towards the BJP.
