The Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) student wing, Chhatra-Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), is preparing to enter student politics in Uttarakhand and run for elections in colleges and universities. According to (Retd) Colonel Ajay Kothiyal, the party's chief ministerial candidate in the recently concluded assembly elections, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party intends to consolidate youth influence and lure college students to the party. However, in light of the recent violent incidents at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the question arises of whether political parties should be permitted to enter the gates of educational institutions.

When a clash erupted between two groups of students among Left organisations and members of the RSS’ student wing, ABVP, at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi on April 10th, The fight between students affiliated with allegedly broke out over non-vegetarian food being served in the hostel mess on the Hindu festival of Ram Navami. Now, the police have registered an FIR against unidentified ABVP members on the complaint of some students, while the JNU administration has initiated a probe into the incident. Meanwhile, students affiliated with left groups have called for a protest at the Delhi Police headquarters at 2 pm on Monday. Strict action will be taken against students found guilty under university rules, but national politics is costing these students their education and future. Recently, Hindu Sena posters were found on JNU’s gate.

The agenda is to inform students about the plans that the party aims to implement and carry out in the university and colleges for students' facilities to try to establish a healthy and honest political atmosphere within the university campus. However, ample examples show that such a step has led to a power tussle on campus, leaving students engaged in tussling and violence. Student politics in Uttarakhand has predominantly been dominated by the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the respective student wings of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. While AAP lost all 70 seats in the assembly elections last month, it seems the party is seeking to make inroads through the youth of the state.
