The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced the presentation of its budget for the financial year 2022-23 on March 30th, according to local news bodies. However, the BBMP elections continue to remain impending since September 2020 after the previous city council's term expired. While the elections were earlier scheduled in March or May of this year but are most likely to be delayed again. The Karnataka government has cited several reasons for the delay of the election.
Firstly, the government's urgent focus on handling the Covid 19 pandemic. Secondly, the government found the need to restructure the BBMP wards which caused to be one of the major reasons for delaying the awaited polls. With an increase in the number of wards from 198 to 243 under the new BBMP Act, the SEC could not complete orders by the Karnataka HC to schedule the polls much earlier in January 2021. The matter now seems to belong to the Supreme Court as CM Bommai was recorded saying that the elections can only be held after delamination of the new wards is done which will be based on SCs verdict.
Furthermore, a BBMP official was reported saying that certain administrative problems will be resolved by the announcement of the budget, which will further help resolve any disputes and aid the process.
According to reports, the BBMP has pending bills of up to 3000 crore rupees for the fiscal year 2021-22. Keeping the debt in mind, officials predict that the body’s budget will be similar to that of last year, estimating around ₹9000 Crore.
